I got a ticket for speeding 16 mph above the limit. Will it affect my CDL?
It is quite likely that such a speeding accident will affect the privileges you get from Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Having a CDL delivers you greater responsibility compared to ordinary drivers, as your license can be suspended for reasons other than simply getting maximum rule violation points. Here are some reasons for losing your CDL:
Having two serious traffic accidents with your commercial auto during the last 3 years. This will suspend your CDL for 60 days or more.
Having three serious traffic accidents during the same period will suspend your CDL for at least 120 days. By "serious" police workers mean fatal accidents, speeding more than 15 mph above the speed limit, police chase.
So, having a ticket for driving 16 mph above the limit is likely to cause you some problems depending on your driving record. Having a speed limit excess more than 15 mph is considered to be a serious traffic violation for a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). Thus, if you have previously had a single serious traffic violation, your CDL will be suspended for 60 days, and if two - for 120 respectively. And if you already have serious violations with your personal driving license, it is likely that this will also affect your CDL.
The problem gets even worse, because unlike personal license, you can not take special courses for your ticket to be dismissed. CDL holders are prohibited from such options, so if you get your license suspended for a certain period then you have nothing else to do but wait. Make sure to get in touch with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles for detailed information on points and tickets for CDL drivers.
